What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a drug-free, non-surgical science that is concerned with human health and prevention of disease. Doctors of Chiropractic are physicians who view the human body as an integrated being, giving special attention to the physiological and biochemical aspects of health. This approach to health includes the structural, spinal, musculoskeletal, neurological, vascular, nutritional, emotional and environmental relationships of the body. The doctors of Natural Balance Wellness Center utilize adjustments to the spine and extremities to help enduce natural mobilization and alignment to the human frame, thus freeing any irritation or dysfunction of the nervous system which innately controls every aspect of life.

What will happen during my initial appointment?

Your initial appointment will involve a detailed health history and a thorough physical examination of the affected area. Depending on your condition or injury, the doctor may take x rays to provide a better overall picture of the cause of your symptoms and structure of your body. At the end of your first visit we will schedule you for a report of findings allowing the doctor to explain their findings to you, answer any questions you may have, and establish recommendations for treatment.

Do adjustments hurt?

The most common answer is a resounding, No! The vast majority of people who receive care in our office say there isno pain at all, and actually how good it feels during and after their adjustment. It is possible to have some soreness and ache especially after your first few visits. The body is in an adaptive state so often it can mimic the soreness of a muscle after a workout. Applying ice, which we highly recommend after your first few visits, will help decrease the odds of this occurring.

Do you work with other specialists? Can you handle x-rays, MRIs, and CAT scans?

Our doctors work closely with many other specialists, such as primary care physicians, orthopedists and orthopedic surgeons, neurologists and neurosurgeons, and radiologists. We also make appropriate referrals, as needed. When clinically warranted, we take x-rays, assuring you the highest level of care. Furthermore, we use advanced studies such as MRIs and CAT scans when deemed medically necessary in order to help in your diagnosis and treatment.

What techniques do the doctors use?

Our doctors use a variety of techniques depending on the patient and the condition. The most common techniques include the following:

  • Gonstead and Diversified: both are manual adjusting techniques (a traditional chiropractic adjustment)
  • Low force adjustments utilizing a drop table or hand held Activator instrument.
  • Flexion-distraction (a specialized “low-force” technique to treat disc herniation, scoliosis, and other low back conditions)
  • Non-force soft tissue mobilization and stretching techniques
  • Rehabilitative stretching and strengthening programs and adjunctive physiotherapy modalities, such as ice, and heat.

What kind of training do chiropractors receive?

Most chiropractic colleges require a bachelor’s degree focusing on pre-med studies of chemistry, biochemistry, or kinesiology. During the near year round, three and a half years of chiropractic schooling, students further study chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, anatomy, physiology, and multiple technique courses among others. While attending school students spend over one year in clinics honing their skills and competencies. The doctors of Natural Balance Wellness Center are always improving their knowledge and treatment methods through weekend seminars and webinars to give you the best care possible.
